Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offers an alternative to existing approaches for trauma survivors by helping clients to reconnect with ideals and principles for living that are deeply important to them and that dignify the difficult events that they have survived. This one-day workshop will introduce applications of ACT for survivors of either civilian or military-related trauma. Using a framework of experiential avoidance, participants will learn to adapt traditional exposure-based interventions for an acceptance-based model. You will draw on experiential exercises to help clients move toward values, rather than away from pain. The workshop will demonstrate mindfulness practices that may be useful for trauma survivors. Participants will develop a personal training plan to promote ongoing learning and application of ACT principles. Dr. Sonja Batten is a clinical psychologist with two decades of experience in ACT. She has presented workshops internationally and is the Past President ofthe Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. Dr. Batten has extensive experience in the field of traumatic stress. She is the author of the well received text, Essentials of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Date: 10am-4.30pm, 8th May 2015
Venue: Anna Freud Centre, London
Tutor: David Trickey
Trauma-Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is the only intervention recommended by NICE guidelines for Children and Young People with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people (Meiser-Stedman, 2002) will be presented and explained. This model will be used to consider:
1 How children and families react to traumatic events
2 Risk factors for PTSD and
3 How TF-CBT and related interventions decrease distress and increase functioning.
Based on the notion of “processing”, ways in which a healing environment can be created around the child will be discussed, so that processing of the event is more likely to occur spontaneously. Direct TF-CBT interventions with the young person, with the family and with the school will be described and some time will be given to considering the difficulties associated with the fact that the intervention involves doing something that the client wishes to avoid.
The evidence for TF-CBT and other interventions will be presented. The workshop will use a variety of training methods including interactive presentation of theory with case illustrations (with clients’ consent) and small group discussion.
This course is suitable for practitioners who have a therapeutic role with children and young people who have experienced traumatic events. The course will also be accredited to the Certificate of Psychotraumatology.
