The conference will bring together speakers who are leading the field in the understanding and treatment of trauma across the lifespan with the provision of skills-based workshops to complement the exemplary keynote speeches below. Biographies and abstracts of workshops

Dr Robin Bennett - is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist who qualified at UCL in 2004. He is currently working in Tower Hamlets Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service, East London Foundation NHS Trust, as well as Recolo (community neuropsychological rehabilitation service for children, young people and families) and is a director of Trauma Psychology UK. He has previously worked at two NHS specialist PTSD treatment services. He has trained mental health professionals in the UK and overseas in the assessment and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents. He is trained in various trauma-focussed approaches including CBT, EMDR, NET/KIDNET, and CATT (Children’s Accelerated Trauma Therapy). He has been interviewed on LBC radio, BBC News24 and BBC World News regarding issues relating to childhood trauma and other mental health issues. He is currently a board member of the UK Psychological Trauma Society (UKPTS). Abstract: Early Life Traumas and the Developing Child.

Dr Jo Billings – is a senior Clinical Psychologist and Deputy Clinical Lead for the Berkshire Traumatic Stress Service. She has extensive experience of working across both specialist trauma services and secondary care mental health services. Her clinical and research interests include complex trauma, trauma and psychosis, vicarious trauma and trauma affecting occupational populations such as emergency service workers and mental health workers. Dr Billings is trained in trauma-focused CBT, EMDR, NET and schema-focused therapy. She has trained clinicians across the UK on the identification and treatment of PTSD. She is an accredited CBT practitioner, supervisor and trainer with the BABCP.

Dr Anne Douglas - is Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist and the Head of the Trauma Service in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. She is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Glasgow and has specialized in the field of trauma for over 25 years. She has provided specialist Trauma placements for clinical psychology and psychiatric trainees over this period. Her Doctoral research focused on parenting anxieties in mothers with a history of childhood sexual abuse. In 2000, she set up the Compass mental health liaison team for asylum seekers and refugees which she has continued to lead. Compass has won a number of national awards: In 2004 the team was awarded the Scottish government’s first prize for innovative practice. In 2006 she received the British Psychological Society Award for Promoting Equality of Opportunity in the UK. In 2008 the Compass Team won the Equality in Health Care Award at the Scottish Health Awards. Dr Douglas has been instrumental in setting up and developing the Trauma service in NHSGG&C. She has published widely in the field of Trauma and is a regular conference speaker both at national and international Trauma conferences. She has been a member of the British Psychological Society for over 30 years and is a member of the Clinical Division. She is registered with the HPC. She is also a registered psychoanalytic psychotherapist with the British Psychoanalytic Council. In 2012 she was awarded an OBE for services to the health of asylum seekers and refugees.

Professor Chris Freeman - Consultant Psychiatrist and Consultant Psychotherapist, NHS Lothian Edinburgh. Chris is a fellow of The Royal College of Psychiatrists and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh. He has been a Consultant psychiatrist since 1980. He is Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Ethics Committee and a member of The Intercollegiate Ethics Forum. He is an Honorary Professor at Queen Margaret University Edinburgh. He has worked in trauma services since 1988 and set up the Rivers centre for Traumatic Stress in Edinburgh 15 years ago. He is currently trying to develop Trauma informed mental health services and trauma informed general health services in Scotland. He was Chair of The United Kingdom Trauma Group for 8 years and then with a group of colleagues from that group set up the UKPTS five years ago and became its founding President. He has been an elected board member of ESTSS and is now a board member because of his UKPTS role. He has written several books, some 200 scientific papers and edited a major psychiatric textbook for 15 years. He currently works as a Regional Consultant in the South East of Scotland coordinating services for eating disorders across four Health Boards. He set up training courses in Scotland for CBT and UK wide for IPT.

She has widely contributed to the dissemination of her clinical knowledge through writing and delivering over 150 clinical workshops and talks in north America and Europe. Dr Mark Andrew McFetridge - has been a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Retreat York since 1996. More recently he also evolved into head of the Psychological Trauma Service, Professional lead, and chair of research. The Retreat is a charitable independent psychiatric hospital developed and overseen by the Society of Friends (Quakers) from 1796 to the present day. After training as a clinical psychologist in 1987 he went back to Leeds to do further research, submitting his Doctoral thesis; The process of EMDR therapy for Post Traumatic Stress in 2001. As part of this he extended his EMDR training; having previously completed Level 1 by Puk 1996 in London, he was fortunate to complete Level 2 with Shapiro in New York in 1998. Since then he has also completed trainings in Cognitive Therapy in 2010 (Newcastle) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (foundation training Chester) in 2009. Mark continues to be fascinated by and learn from his clients, spending much of his time in clinical work within a DBT-informed therapeutic community for women with histories of attachment problems compounded by complex trauma and associated affect regulation difficulties. Dr Sarah Heke - is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Director of the Institute of Psychotrauma, East London Foundation NHS Trust. She qualified from the University of Leicester in 2000 with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and has subsequently held various positions in the NHS including: sexual health and HIV, community mental health and substance misuse services. For five years she worked at the Haven Whitechapel and provided psychological therapy and assessments for over 250 women and men affected by sexual assault and rape. She has provided training and lectured on the psychological impact of rape and sexual assault to the Metropolitan police and other constabularies, the Crown Prosecution service and a wide range of medical professionals. She has published in the area and presented at national and international conferences. She is currently Secretary of the UK Trauma Group and sits on the Committee of the UK Psychological Trauma Society (UKPTS). She is also an accredited BABCP member and is trained in EMDR. Her current post includes managing the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder service for East London, where she continues to work therapeutically with a wide range of people affected trauma including sexual trauma and violence.

Gill Moreton (current UKPTS Treasurer) - is the Specialist Psychological Therapist, Rivers Centre for Traumatic Stress, NHS Lothian, Edinburgh. She is a psychological therapist at NHS Lothian’s Rivers Centre for Traumatic Stress in Edinburgh and lead clinician for all of the Centre’s external contracts, including its work with emergency service personnel. Gill began her professional career in 1991 as a child and family social worker and team manager in Central Regional Council with a special interest in work with survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence and child sexual abuse. In 1996 she was involved in the immediate response to the shootings at Dunblane Primary School and in the establishment of the Dunblane Support Centre where she worked for the next five years. Since then she has specialised in the treatment of children and adults affected by trauma, completing psychotherapy training in CBT and EMDR. She was coordinator of the CAMHS Child Sexual Abuse service in NHS Lothian prior to joining the Rivers Centre for Traumatic Stress in June 2002. Gill now manages the services The Rivers Centre provides to a number of Scottish Police and Fire services, the Scottish Ambulance Service, City of Edinburgh Council, the Scottish Jury Service and Lothian and Borders Strategic Coordinating Group. She is involved in training and research in the UK and internationally, and has a particular interest in work with emergency service personnel and other staff with occupational exposure to potentially traumatic stressors. She has developed a “Buddy” model of peer support for police firearms officers and has also developed resources for the friends and family of Rivers Centre clients, establishing a group model of support for adult and child “supporters”. She provides supervision to staff working in the CAMHS CSA team and EMDR supervision to a wide range of NHS colleagues. Gill is currently a Consultant to the Scottish Government’s Mental Health Team and is leading the production of national Guidance on Psychosocial and Mental Health Care following major incidents. She is also working with the Scottish Government to develop a model for improving the assessment and management of trauma reactions in primary care. Gill was a founder member of the UK Psychological Trauma Society and was Secretary for two years before becoming Treasurer in 2012. Dr Lisa Reynolds - is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and the Team Lead for the Trauma and Homelessness Team which is part of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Trauma Services . She found her way into complex trauma through working within addiction services and mental health services for female offenders. After graduating from the D.Clin Psych from the University of Glasgow she has undertaken developing services and Interventions for people experiencing complex trauma. Dr Sandi Richman - is an accredited trainer and accredited consultant in EMDR. Her trainings are fully approved by EMDR International Association and EMDR-Europe Association. She was trained by Dr. Francine Shapiro, the founder of EMDR, and has used EMDR in her own practice for over 19 years. Sandi is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist supervising clinical practice in a number of trauma services in the UK. She headed up an EMDR service within the Traumatic Stress Service at the Maudsley Hospital in South London for 12 years. Sandi has delivered a number of keynotes at Trauma Conferences over the years presenting on working with the survivors of torture and complex trauma. Abstract: Phase orientated processing model.

Dr Maeve Crowley - Maeve Crowley is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Europe Approved EMDR Consultant. She leads a Complex Trauma service in Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which deals with clients on the Dissociative spectrum. She trains, supervises and teaches in the area of Complex Trauma and EMDR in her local NHS Trust and beyond. She is a member of the EMDR UK and Ireland Board. Abstract: EMDR with complex trauma.

Kerry Young is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead of the Forced Migration Trauma Service (London). This is an innovative service offering evidence-based cognitive-behavioural treatment to refugees and asylum seekers suffering from PTSD within a phased, multidisciplinary model of intervention. Kerry also works in Oxford University Department of Psychiatry within the Experimental Psychopathology and Cognitive Therapy Lab (EPACT). She has worked for 16 years in trauma and has written and lectured widely on how to treat simple and complex PTSD and how to work with traumatized asylum seekers and refugees.

Dr Katy Robjant is a clinical psychologist specialising in the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees who have PTSD. She works at the Institute of Psychotrauma, East London NHS Foundation Trust and formerly at the Traumatic Stress Service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She is also a VIVO member and has trained mental health professionals in NET at the Refugee Council as well as through the BABCP and UKPTS together with VIVO founders who developed the therapy.
